The very first Super Bowl took place on January 15, 1967 in Los Angeles California. It was the first World Championship Game between the AFL and the NFL between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1970 the AFL merged with the NFL and the Super Bowl became the championship of the National Football League and conclusion to the NFL playoffs in a battle of the two conferences pinning the AFC champions against the NFC champions. Only 19 of the 32 NFL teams can claim the title of Super Bowl Champions. The Pittsburgh Steelers hold the record for most wins with 6 victories, while the New England Patriots are up to 5 after their historic win in the 2017 Super Bowl against the Atlanta Falcons. Since its inception the Super Bowl has grown to be the most watched sporting event in the U.S. with over 100 million viewers watching the game on television each year. The “Big Game” has also grown beyond football in many ways. Viewers look forward to watching the Super Bowl halftime show and advertisements almost as much as the game itself. There are even television segments dedicated to “how to host the best tailgate party” or “cook the best game day wings.” There is no denying that the Super Bowl is an integral part of American culture and the pinnacle of U.S. sporting events.
